Part of the YCCI’s mission is to streamline and expedite the development of research by decreasing administrative and regulatory burdens on investigators through direct support, education, and mentoring in the research discipline. As a recipient of NIH funds however, we are required to ensure that proposed research is scientifically sound, ethical, and in compliance with federal regulatory requirements such as the Federal Policy on Protection of Human Subjects and the HIPAA Privacy Rule. We have what we believe is a quick but thorough review process that provides benefit not only to ensure compliance with federal, University, and local IRB requirements, but also to expedite navigation through internal and external review and approval processes such as Yale IRBs and the FDA.

In general, the YCCI review process is determined by level of risk and whether the proposed research has been peer reviewed. This means that a NIH funded study posing moderate or minimal risk receives an abbreviated YCCI review as does moderate risk, Phase III or IV clinical trials, regardless of funding or peer review. High risk or PHARMA sponsored moderate risk, Phase I or II research proposals normally require a more involved review that includes review by the YCCI Science and Safety Committee.

Note that the Yale Cancer Center and the Department of Pediatrics require internal review by their own protocol review committees (YCC Protocol Review Committee, the Pediatric Protocol Review Committee.) Additionally, other reviews, such as those by the Radiation Safety Committee, may also be required, depending on the research procedures involved.

If you have any questions regarding the YCCI intake and review process, contact Theresa Katz, Protocol Process and Committee Coordinator, at 785-6335 or theresa.katz@yale.edu.
