Dr. Chen is assistant professor of pediatrics (emergency medicine). He received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. He did his residency at pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine. He plans on devoting his academic career to applying new technologies to the clinical problems seen in the emergency department by designing and executing carefully planned patient-oriented research.
Dr. Chen’s project, Use of bedside ultrasound in assessing children with dehydration from gastroenteritis, seeks to improve the assessment of dehydration in children, for whom there is currently no rapid, objective and noninvasive tool that accurately reflects volume status. He is using bedside ultrasound, a relatively new imaging modality in pediatrics, to determine the relationship between amount of fluid loss in pediatric patients with gastroenteritis and the measured inferior vena cava to aorta ratio.
