Scholars

The initial scholar efforts have been focused on junior faculty members and senior fellows who are strongly committed to careers in clinical or translational research. Nominations were requested from departmental chairs and the deans of the schools of Nursing and Public Health for first-term junior faculty members and for fellows who will be ready to transition into faculty status by July 2007. Sixty-two nominations were received and 15 awards were made for a period of 18 months, which included funding for salary support and research support.

The Scholars are a remarkably diverse group of young scientists that comprise seven women and eight men across five NIH racial categories who were drawn from the entire Medical Center campus, including the Schools of Nursing, Public Health, and Medicine (five different academic departments, including three pediatric-focused Scholars). Moreover, their research proposals span the entire range of community-based, translational, and clinical research projects.
