Dr. Tamborlane is Professor and Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology and Deputy Program Director of the Yale General Clinical Research Center. The primary focus of his research has been to advance the treatment of diabetes through patient-oriented research. Major accomplishments have included pioneering studies in the development of insulin pump therapy, direction of the Yale Center in the DCCT/EDIC study, and the demonstration of the role of insulin resistance in normal puberty and pediatric metabolic disorders. His current research effort is directed at assessing the impact of recent advances in insulin pump and glucose sensor technology on the treatment of children type 1 diabetes. Dr. Tamborlane serves as the Steering Committee Chair of the Diabetes Research in Children’s Network (DirecNet), an NIH multicenter group that is testing glucose sensing systems in children. Yale studies have been directed at combining currently available sensor and pump technologies in a practically applicable artificial pancreas. Dr. Tamborlane has served as a research mentor to more than 60 junior faculty members, post-doctoral fellows and medical students, many of whom are now well-known scholars in the field of diabetes research and hold NIH and other peer-reviewed grant awards. He is the Principal Investigator of a NIDDK combined T32 and K12 Awards for post-doctoral fellowship training and the career development of Pediatric Endocrine/Diabetes Physician Scientists.
