Dr. Shulman is an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He is also Associate Director of the Yale Diabetes-Endocrinology Research Center and Associate Director of the Yale Medical Scientist Training Program. Dr. Shulman is widely recognized as one of the leading clinical investigators in the field of diabetes. His studies of the pathophysiological mechanisms of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes using MR spectroscopy and genetically-altered mouse models have been recognized by numerous awards including: the Outstanding Investigator Award from the American Federation for Medical Research, the Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award from the American Diabetes Association, and the Novartis Award in Diabetes. Most recently he was elected to the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Shulman has served as mentor to over 65 individuals, many who have gone on to become outstanding researchers with NIH funding and have become mentors themselves.
