Dr. Sherwin is the C.N.H. Long Professor of Medicine and Director of the Yale General Clinical Research Center, the NIDDK-funded Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center, and the JDRF Center for the Study of Hypoglycemia. Dr. Sherwin is internationally recognized for his research addressing fundamental mechanisms at the bedside and in the laboratory that are directly relevant to diabetes care. His accomplishments include: defining the relative contributions of insulin deficiency and glucagons excess in diabetic hyperglycemia, early development of insulin pump therapy and directing the Kroc Clinical Trial that formed the basis for the DCCT, elucidating the mechanisms for defective glucose counterregulation in type 1 diabetes, and elucidating the key role of the ventromedial hypothalamus in brain glucose sensing. Current human studies rely heavily on collaborations with investigators at the MRRC using fMRI and MR spectroscopy. A secondary area of research is in the immunology of diabetes, including the development of a humanized mouse model of type1 diabetes. Dr. Sherwin is the recipient of P30, R37, R01 and T32 (in diabetes) from NIDDK and a mentor grant from the A.D.A. He received the Novartis Award for long-standing achievement in diabetes research. He has served as the primary mentor for more than 60 postdoctoral fellows, most of whom are full-time faculty members and four of whom have achieved the rank of professor.
