Dr. Shapiro is YCCI’s co-director for education, K program director for post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty at the beginning of their careers and deputy director of the Investigative Medicine Program. He is an internationally recognized expert on clinical epidemiology of infectious diseases and in particular on the efficacy of vaccines, on the use of case-control studies to assess a vaccine's effectiveness, and on treatment and long-term outcomes of persons with Lyme disease. He is well versed in clinical research methodology, having conducting both large-scale randomized clinical trials and observational studies. He has received continuous funding from the NIH to support his research since 1983. He currently holds a K24 award and is Principal Investigator of one R01 grant. He has served as a mentor to more than 40 individuals, many of whom have gone on to be NIH-funded researchers and mentors themselves.
