Dr. Mayes is the Arnold Gesell Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology in the Yale Child Study Center. She is the coordinator of the Center's early childhood services and the chair of the directorial team of the Anna Freud Centre in London. Her work focuses on stress-response and regulatory mechanisms in young children at both biological and psychosocial risk. She has made significant contributions to understanding the effect of prenatal stimulant exposure on the ontogeny of arousal regulatory systems and the relation between dysfunctional emotional regulation and impaired prefrontal cortical function in young children. Additionally, her laboratory studies the impact of environmental adversity including poverty on neurocognitive developmental trajectories in school-aged children. Dr. Mayes has had continuous NIH support since 1985. She holds a K05 award and is the PI of three R01's. She has served as a research mentor for more than 50 individuals from undergraduate to postdoctoral fellows who have successfully applied for NIH fellowship funding under her mentorship. More than 3/4 of her fellows have gone on to academic careers and are mentors themselves.
