Dr. Krystal is Robert L. McNeil, Jr. Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Deputy Chair for Research of the Department of Psychiatry. He is Director of the NIAAA Center for the Translational Neuroscience of Alcoholism, the Clinical Neuroscience Division of the VA National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and VA Alcohol Research Center. He is also Medical Director of the VA Schizophrenia Research Center. His research integrates psychopharmacology, neuroimaging technologies (fMRI, MRS, PET, SPECT), and molecular genetics to study the role of amino acid neurotransmission in major psychiatric disorders - principally alcoholism, schizophrenia, and PTSD. He also leads multicenter clinical trials in alcoholism, PTSD, and schizophrenia funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs Cooperative Studies Program. He has served as mentor to over 40 trainees, most of whom have obtained independent NIH support and several of whom have obtained tenured positions in major Departments of Psychiatry. He is currently mentor to two NIH K12 Awardees.
