Akiko Iwasaki, PhD
Associate Professor of Immunobiology

Mentee:

Timothy Quan

Dr. Akiko Iwasaki received her PhD in Immunobiology from the University of Toronto in 1998 and joined the Yale University School of Medicine in 2000. Her current role is Associate Professor in the Department of Immunobiology, where she is studying the role of the mucosal surface in immunity. Currently, Dr. Iwasaki’s laboratory is focusing on how immunity is initiated and maintained at the mucosal surfaces, particularly by the dendritic cells (DCs), through natural portals of entry for pathogens that are of significant health concerns in the world. Ultimately, Dr. Iwasaki’s longterm goal is to utilize the knowledge gained through these areas of research in the development of effective vaccines or microbicides for the prevention of transmission of viral and bacterial pathogens.
