Margaret K. Hostetter, MD
Jean McLean Wallace Professor and Chair, Pediatrics Chief, Immunology and Physician-in-Chief, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital

Mentee:

Michael Levene

Dr. Hostetter’s research interests center on the pathogenesis of infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Candida albicans; vaccine development; and the medical evaluation of internationally adopted children. She has studied Streptococcus pneumoniae, the leading cause of death due to respiratory infections in children around the world, and on Candida. Her work on Candida albicans focus on factors that increase risk of bloodstream infections in premature newborns and other immunocompromised hosts. She and members of her laboratory hold five patents for discoveries in these areas. Her research has been funded continuously by the NIH since 1983, and she will head the first study section for the Interdisciplinary Research grants of the NIH Roadmap Program. She is program director of the Pediatric Scientist Development Program, a multi-million grant funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to mentor and train pediatric physicianscientists. More than 100 graduates of the program are now faculty members of pediatric departments in the U.S. and Canada.
