Dr. Elias is the Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor of Medicine and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He is an internationally recognized expert on lung inflammation, injury, repair, and remodeling responses. He has developed unique murine modeling systems to investigate pathogenetic mechanisms that contribute to these responses and championed the translation of the pathogenetic mechanisms discovered in these models to humans and human disorders. He has received continuous funding from the NIH since 1984 and is currently the Principal Investigator on one Program Project grant, four R01 awards and a T32 training grant in pulmonary biology. Dr. Elias has served as a mentor for over 35 individuals many of whom now have independent laboratories and funding.
