Gail D'Onofrio

Gail D’Onofrio, MD, MS
Professor of Surgery (Emergency Medicine)

Dr. D’Onofrio was promoted to Professor of Surgery (Emergency Medicine) in 2006. She is an experienced clinical researcher focuses on the treatment of patients with unhealthy alcohol use. Most recently, in collaboration with other Yale investigators from the Departments of Psychiatry and Medicine, she has refined a specific brief intervention for harmful and hazardous drinkers presenting to the Emergency Department (ED). Dr. D’Onofrio is also the Director and Principal Investigator of Project ASSERT, a groundbreaking program utilizing community outreach workers in the Yale-New Haven Hospital ED to identify and provide early interventions for patients with alcohol and/or other drug problems as well as other selected health risks such as domestic violence, smoking, depression, and lack of primary care services. In addition Dr. D’Onofrio is the Medical Director of the Women’s Heart Advantage Program that aims to improve the cardiovascular health of women and improve outcomes of women with heart disease. Dr. D’Onofrio has mentored more than 50 faculty members and residents over the past 15 years. She has been a mentor at the Meharry/Vanderbilt Alliance as part of a SAMSHA/HRSA grant, and is currently a mentor to a Brown University faculty member with a K23 award.
