Dr. Cleary, currently Professor of Health Care Policy and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, will become Dean of Public Health at Yale and Chair of Epidemiology and Public Health on July 1, 2006. He is an expert on ways to improve the quality of health care. Since the 1980s, he has been actively involved in research on people infected with HIV, emphasizing the ways in which infection affects people’s lives and the factors affecting quality of medical care. Another focus has been on developing better methods of eliciting information from patients about their care and studying determinants of variations in care quality through the design, collection, and use of consumers' assessments; the goal of this work is to inform health care choices and improve health care quality. Throughout his career, Dr. Cleary has mentored students and colleagues to develop their interest and skills in health and health services research. He has been a member of the Institute of Medicine since 1994, and in 2002, received the Distinguished Investigator Award of the Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy.
