Dr. Caprio is an internationally recognized authority on patient-oriented research in childhood obesity. Her work uses sophisticated but relatively non-invasive techniques to evaluate novel clinical observations and pathophysiological questions across all age groups. She is the Principal Investigator on two RO1 grants to study obesity and type 2 diabetes in youth, and holds a K24 Award for patient-oriented research. Since 2002, she has been part of a NIDDK-sponsored multi-center trial for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes in youth. In 2003 she received the Bayer Scholar Award for Research in Diabetes. She is a member of the NIDDK Study Section of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases B Subcommittee and the FDA Advisory Endocrinology and Metabolism Committee, and an ad hoc member of the IPOD NIDDK Study Section. Dr. Caprio has served as a mentor to more than 10 individuals, many of whom have gone on to be NIH-funded researchers.
