Dr. Bender is a noted expert in vascular biology, particularly in the interactions between leukocyte and endothelial cells. His research has broad implications in the areas of cardiology, immunobiology and dermatology, among others. His studies are aimed at defining the cellular and molecular mechanisms which govern cell interactions that play a role in such processes as inflammation, graft rejection and atherosclerosis. He has made major contributions to medicine through his research on inflammatory, immune and hormonal effects on the endothelium. Dr. Bender has authored or co-authored more than 50 scientific articles and numerous abstracts, and has contributed chapters to a number of books, including the "Yale University School of Medicine Heart Book," edited by Drs. Barry Zaret, Lawrence Cohen and Marvin Moser. He is a member of the vascular and biology transplant program at the Yale School of Medicine Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine.
