- CARE partnered with the Yale School of Public Health to offer an exciting series, “Milestones in Public Health Grand Rounds: Health Disparities—the Challenge of the New Millennium.” All talks in this series highlighted how differences in various health issues affect our community.
- October 2, 2008 - Real Life Real Talk Sex Ed for Parents Workshop. CARE, in partnership with Yale University’s WorkLife Program, sponsored Real Life Real Talk’s Sex Ed for Parents workshop. This interactive workshop provided nearly 20 parents with an introduction to youth culture today and provided them with tools to begin talking with their children about sensitive topics related to sex and sexuality.
- September 20, 2008 - CARE Joined the Chatham Square Neighborhood Association for Its Annual Festival. CARE joined with many other partners to celebrate community at the Chatham Square Festival. The Festival was a tremendous success, capturing the enthusiasm and energy of the Chatham Square neighborhood—almost 400 adults and 800 children attended the festival! CARE partnered with CitySeed, providing healthy snack tastings from locally grown farms—including juicy grapes and tomatoes that kids (and adults) gobbled up. CARE also collaborated with Elm City Cycling to organize a Bicycle Rodeo—teaching safe riding tips and providing bike helmets to 35 children for just $5 each.
- CARE also hosted an informational table and conducted an informal survey about the health priorities that are considered important in Chatham Square.
- May 22, 2008 -New Haven Childhood Obesity Summit: Translating Research to Action. The first New Haven Childhood Obesity Summit was held on Thursday, The Greater New Haven Leadership Class of 2008 hosted the summit, which was co-sponsored by CARE along with colleagues at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, Anthem, and Yale New Haven Hospital.
- February 28, 2008: CARE sponsored an event at the Stetson library in the Dixwell neighborhood in honor of American Heart Month and African American History Month. The event featured a talk with Dr. Woody Lee, a cardiologist and professor of medicine at Yale University. The talk, entitled, “Am I Too Young to Have a Heart Attack?” included an open discussion with community members who had a chance to ask Dr. Lee questions about keeping our hearts healthy.
- November 12, 2007 – CARE sponsored a public event to highlight Diabetes Month. Diabetes Awareness Day was held at the Dixwell-Yale University Community Learning Center.
- September 12, 2007 – The CARE Research Partnership Program announced the release of a second round of community-university pilot projects. Request for Proposals were due on December 3, 2007.
- July, 2007 – The CARE Research Partnership Program awarded funding to its first community-university research projects. The research includes:
- A family-based childhood obesity prevention intervention led by Fair Haven Community Health Center and the Yale Department of Pediatrics.
- A youth violence reduction intervention coordinated by investigators from New Haven Public Schools, Community Mediation, Inc., Yale School of Public Health, and the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center.
- May 14 – 15, 2007 – CARE Future Search Consensus Conference brought local university, community, civic, and business health leaders together to guide CARE’s growth and priorities for improving health and healthcare in New Haven.
